People’s Rights and Social Justice
People’s CORE engages the community in facilitating the struggle for people’s rights and social justice. Community members are mobilized through grassroots advocacy to implement campaigns with a focus on systemic change. When community members actively assert themselves as campaign stakeholders, they build their own access to greater economic resources, political power, and social participation.
Telecommunications Education and Assistance in Multiple-languages
People’s CORE is a member of the Telecommunications Education and Assistance in Multiple-languages (TEAM) consortium that is trained to provide education and assistance to telecommunications consumers in their primary languages. Consumers who have a limited proficiency in English are at a disadvantage when trying to resolve billing issues with their phone companies. Through the TEAM program, People’s CORE assists consumers when problems exist and provides education to help consumers avoid problems in the future. People’s CORE works with seniors, immigrants, and members of the Filipino American community in a variety of Filipino dialects including Cebuano, Ilokano, and Tagalog.
Justice for Filipino American Veterans
On February 18, 1946, the United States Congress passed the Rescission Act, which effectively nullified the veteran benefits promised to all Filipinos who served under the direction of the United States military during World War II. This unjust disregard for the soldiers’ service and sacrifice prompted the December 7th Movement (D7M)’s first mass mobilization in 1993 where the multi-sectoral community alliance Alyansa ng Komunidad (AK) rallied alongside 600 Filipino American WWII veterans to demand equity, justice, and recognition for their service. Under People’s CORE, these undertakings evolved into Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV), which unites a broad contingent of community, student, veteran, and youth organizations to advocate for Filipino American WWII veterans.
