Culture and Arts Enhancement
Arts and culture have historically played pivotal roles in creating, reinforcing, and sustaining positive change realized through social movements. People’s CORE recognizes the immeasurable impact that arts and culture can make in people’s lives. In Los Angeles, we offer arts and culture education to increase accessibility for all people.
Xkrima Close-Quarters Combat Institute
Through the Xkrima Close-Quarters Combat Institute established in 2001, People’s CORE preserves the cultural tradition of eskrima, a Filipino weapon-based martial art known for its utilization of the durable yet lightweight rattan stick. The courses available at the Institute provide community members with skills in a traditional art, a practical foundation in reality-based self defense, and opportunities to develop physical fitness and self-esteem. The Institute’s faculty and students are available to perform live demonstrations at various public events such as cultural, faith-based, and school fairs. Art by the People, for the People
Through the power of creative expression, artists possess a unique capability to employ an array of captivating media that can educate and unite people around social justice issues. People’s CORE is proud to curate a select collection of works illustrating community empowerment and the need to take action. Through our endeavors to foster enhancement of the arts, certain pieces can be made available for exhibition at festivals, gallery shows, and other culturally-oriented events.
